MCRI supports advocacy to improve the lives of children. Our Board Member Dr. Goh Chee Leong currently chairs the Steering Committee preparing the Alternative Report on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Four of our team are working on the report and MCRI acts as the Secretariat for the project.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child is an international treaty that sets out a full set of human rights standards for children. Through ratification of the Convention, national governments affirm their commitment to ensure children’s rights in their country and are required to submit reports on the implementation of the Convention to the Committee on the Rights of the Child, through the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
In conjunction with the states parties’ reports, the Committee also accepts supplementary, or “shadow,” reports from civil society bodies that provide an additional perspective on implementation of the Convention. Malaysia has never submitted an NGO shadow report in the past. The current project under the direction of MCRI will culminate in the first NGO Shadow Report from Malaysia.
We are also participating actively in the formation of a coalition for children’s rights that will be the platform for other initiatives in this area. NGOs who work in the area of child’s rights will be trained and equipped in data gathering which will increase their capacity to develop effective interventions and to advocate for children’s rights. Through such undertakings we help increase awareness of Child Rights and the implications of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child including the importance of child participation.
